Liverpool could be set to miss out on the signing of David Alaba, as reports in Spain claim the Bayern Munich defender is in talks with Real Madrid. Alaba is expected to leave Bayern before long and had been linked with a move to Anfield.
Alaba had reportedly been lined up as a potential replacement for the injured Virgil van Dijk.
The Austrian defender, who switched from being a left-back to a centre-back after the emergence of Alphonso Davies, is out of contract at the end of the season.
He had been offered an extension to stay at the Allianz Arena, but has seemingly decided he wants to leave for a change of scenery.
Liverpool had been tipped to make a move during either the January transfer window or next summer, but it now appears they’ll be beaten to the punch.

Spanish outlet AS claims Madrid are in talks with Alaba over a potential deal.
Alaba would be free to sign for Madrid in the January transfer window and move for free at the end of the season if he were to sign a pre-contract agreement.
Liverpool would also be able to sign him on a free if they were able to convince him to snub Madrid.
But the AS report claims the Spanish champions are confident that they will be able to get a deal over the line.

That would leave Liverpool needing to look elsewhere for a potential replacement for Van Dijk.
And former Premier League defender Danny Mills believes Liverpool were never likely to sign the two-time Champions League-winner, suggesting he will have had a deal on the table long before rejecting Bayern’s latest offer.
“I think Liverpool will be looking,” Mills said. “It would be very difficult to win the title and challenge for the Champions League with a very inexperienced back four.
“I am sure a lot of the top clubs will be looking at Alaba.

“He can sign a pre-contract in January and I would be very, very surprised if he does not have something lined up already because he is world-class.
“A player of that ability, that class, that pedigree will not wait for an auction come the end of the season.
“If he has not signed a new contract there is obviously a reason. I would suggest something is pencilled in.
“He will have a good idea of where he is going.”
