Lionel Messi made his home debut for PSG against Lyon on Sunday evening in the French capital – but failed to have a telling impact as Mauro Icardi was called upon to grab a late winner.

Barcelona icon Messi got a rapturous reception from the Parc des Princes crowd for their Ligue 1 meeting, with the hosts going into the game two points clear at the top of the table.

Messi started in a front four that included Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and international colleague Angel Di Maria, with Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye tasked with adding some solidarity in midfield.

Gianluigi Donnarumma got the nod in goal ahead of Keylor Navas, with a back four of Nuno Mendes, Presnel Kimpembe, Marquinhos and Thilo Kehrer.

Messi played a starring role in the first-half without being able to break the deadlock, with Anthony Lopes first saving well from his close range strike before the Argentine smashed the post with a long-range free-kick.

Mbappe also missed a good chance to score past Lopes as the opening 45 minutes drew to a close, with Di Maria lively in the middle of the park.

After going in level at the break, Lucas Paqueta put Lyon ahead with a smart low finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma just after the hour mark.

It was then time for PSG to attack, with Neymar winning a penalty in controversial circumstances before putting the ball on the spot and sending the goalkeeper the wrong way in the 66th minute.

On the 74th minute, Messi was taken off by Pochettino for fellow new boy Achraf Hakimi, making for his longest appearance in PSG shirt on what was his third outing in all competitions.

While heading off to the bench, Messi turned to look at his manager with a baffled expression, and looked just as confused while taking a seat next to Leandro Paredes with Rafinha looking on.

PSG were however able to find a winning goal, with Icardi finishing in style from an Mbappe cross with just second remaining on the clock.
