Gary Lineker has given a classic sarcastic response to the news of Jose Mourinho's dismissal at Tottenham.
It comes just hours after confirming themselves as one of the 12 clubs that are set to break away from the sport.
Dubbed the European Super League, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham have all joined up.
As well as the 'top six', Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan are also involved – along with three more unnamed clubs who are set to join soon.
And as football reels from that news, Spurs have dropped another bombshell after announcing the dismissal of Mourinho – just a week before they take on City in the Carabao Cup final.
Lineker tweeted in response: "Jose Mourinho is fired. He is the first of the European Super League managers to lose their job."
There were some hilarious responses to the news, too, with one fan replying: “Guides them to Super League qualification and this is the thanks he gets…”
“He might be Special but he’s not Super,” another said.
And this fan said: “Perfect timing for the Carabao cup match!”
Spurs chief Daniel Levy released a short statement after the news broke.
“Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club," he said.
"Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.
"On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.
"He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution."
Mourinho leaves Tottenham seventh in the Premier League after suffering 10 league defeats – the most he has ever had in one year in his career.
Ryan Mason and Chris Powell have taken charge until the end of the season with Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers early frontrunners to take over.
