Leeds fans demand Patrick Bamford decision from Marcelo Bielsa after Middlesbrough miss

Leeds United fans are losing patience with striker Patrick Bamford, after he missed an apparent open goal during the Whites’ 1-0 win over Middlesbrough on Wednesday night. They have demanded that Bamford be dropped from Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI, after failing to score a goal in an entire month.

Leeds beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at the Riverside in the Championship, as Bielsa’s side continue their march for promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds were largely on top throughout the tie, and could have won by a much larger margin.

Mateusz Klich opened the scoring just before half-time, after Pablo Hernandez hit the post.

Bamford had a huge opportunity to extend Leeds’ lead late on, after Luke Ayling’s excellent run.

However, he former Norwich City and Middlesbrough star failed to control the ball, and the opportunity went begging.

A few supporters suggested that it was simply good defending from Ryan Shotton to get a touch on the ball.

But, most fans fumed at Bamford for failing to end his barren streak, insisting that it’s time he was dropped.

“No way we can keep playing Bamford, he missed an open goal from a yard out,” said one Leeds fan.

A Twitter user added: “Seems like Bamford has a stranglehold on Bielsa to play him in all games despite misfiring. Leeds are losing points. Bielsa is solely to blame if Leeds miss promotion this season. His tactics n team selection.”

One fan said: “There’s not one bit of a strikers instinct in Bamford it’s boring now how bad he is. He missed tonight from on the goal line & that’s not even first time is it.”

Another Leeds supporter tweeted: “Patrick Bamford, what can you say? Missed a sitter and then actually saved a goal from going in. I always hope he does well but we need a replacement.”

“People can’t keep backing Bamford,” added another supporter. “He literally stopped it going in the goal today. Harder to miss than score. 32k a week and the best he can do is ‘hold the ball up’. leaves massive question marks. Haven’t got anywhere near the value that he actually is. 2 million at best.”

One Leeds fan said: “The thought of another game watching Bamford miss sitters makes me want to gauge my eyes out.”

Another Whites supporter added: “Just can’t believe Bamford missed his chance that was put on a plate by Ayling, was easier to score than miss!! #lufc.”

Despite Bamford’s failed chance, Leeds still won the match, and were one step closer to finally returning to the Premier League.

It looked like Leeds would be extending their lead over the those chasing automatic promotion, until Fulham’s Aleksandr Mitrovic scored a winning goal against Swansea City late on.

That means Bielsa’s side are still five points clear of third place.

Next up for the club is an away trip to Hull City on Saturday (12.30pm), with the Tigers in free-fall. They haven’t won a league match since the 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on New Year’s Day.
