Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp still dreams about signing French star Kylian Mbappe – but thinks the player has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.
Mbappe has formed a reputation as one of the most feared strikers in the world, and he continues to impress both for PSG and for the France national side.
The 21-year-old has scored a stunning 92 goals in 127 appearances for PSG since joining from Monaco in 2017, but rumours continue to link him with some of the elite clubs around Europe.
Mbappe's contract is due to expire in 2022, meaning PSG may be more inclined to sell him next summer in order to avoid letting him go on a free the year after.
And according to Spanish publication AS he would be Klopp's ideal signing, with the German boss having followed Mbappe's rise to stardom closely.
However, there is a belief that the player himself is desperate to go to Madrid, due in part to his long-term admiration of their manager and his compatriot Zinedine Zidane.
Mbappe wrote an emotional account of his first meeting with his idol in The Players' Tribune earlier this year, in which he recounted being starstruck by the legendary figure.
That, plus the history associated with Madrid, means Klopp is realistic about his chances of ever being able to work with Mbappe.
Nevertheless, he may well instruct Liverpool to keep an eye on the situation in case Los Blancos decide not to make a move next summer.
Mbappe still clearly admires the Reds, and his comments to The Mirror last season clearly show he would consider a move to Anfield if one to Madrid does not come to pass.
He said: "This season, Liverpool have been a machine in the Premier League,
"They have made winning look easy but the truth is that it is never easy.
"Performances like they have been having don’t just happen.
"To be as ruthless as they have been would come from lots of hard work in training and from having a very good manager."
Juventus are another giant being linked with Mbappe, with some reports stating they are preparing a stunning £360m bid – a deal which would surely blow Liverpool out of the water.
