Klopp opens up on Thiago’s initial Liverpool struggles with brutal putdown

Jurgen Klopp has opened up on Thiago's initial struggles at Liverpool as the Spaniard has emerged as one of the top stars on Merseyside.

Thiago joined the Reds from Bayern Munich over the summer of 2020, but he struggled to find his way initially. But as Liverpool and Manchester City's title race looks set to go down to the wire, Thiago has emerged as one of Liverpool's most important cogs.

The Reds will likely need to win all of their remaining games and hope City slip up during the run-in to claim the title. And Klopp has praised the Spaniard while brutally shutting down his doubters.

"People were questioning if he suits our football? Thank God these people don't make decisions," Klopp said on Friday ahead of the Merseyside derby.

"If a player is calming a game down in moments due to a lot of reasons – one of them is just to have a look, or whatever – it is of course nothing we thought [was wrong].

"More important is Thiago wanted to join us and knew how we play. It's been about getting fit, staying fit and getting used to slight differences at the club."

Thiago had struggled with fitness when he first arrived on Merseyside in 2020. Shortly after arriving, Thiago contracted Covid, and once back in the first-team fold he suffered a knee injury in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park that cost him two months.

When Thiago finally shook off the injuries he arrived into a team that saw Jordan Henderson and Fabinho covering in central defence for long-term injuries.

It hasn't been until this campaign that Thiago has been able to strut his stuff in a full-strength Liverpool side.
