Juventus president Andrea Agnelli insists Inter Milan title clash WILL be played in Turin despite fears over coronavirus outbreak

  • Four Serie A games were postponed at the weekend due to the coronavirus
  • The outbreak in Turin means Juve’s clash with Inter on Sunday is in some doubt
  • But Juve president Andrea Agnelli believes the game will go ahead in Turin
  • The title clash marks the return of Inter coach Antonio Conte to Juventus

Club president Andrea Agnelli insists Juventus’ title showdown with Inter Milan this Sunday won’t be moved outside of Turin despite coronavirus fears.

Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte postponed four Serie A fixtures at the weekend after a coronavirus outbreak in Turin – Torino’s home game against Parma was one of the games called off.

Although Agnelli said moving the game away from the city would be ‘extremely complicated’, he didn’t rule out the notion that the match could be played behind-closed-doors as the priority had to be the health of the public.

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli insists the Inter Milan game on Sunday will be in Turin

Italy has been struck by a severe outbreak of the coronavirus and football has been effected

‘I believe that the priority for the system of the country must be the public health,’ he told Italian outlet Radio24.

‘Every decision must be taken to protect the public health. Interruption of sports is difficult. The schedule is extremely clogged due to previous decisions and it’s difficult to reschedule a match.

‘Organising a match like Juve-Inter in a different stadium is extremely complicated. I’m sorry about the show itself, because the Italian championship is affected because of a historic game of football. But the priority is the public health.’

The game is not only a huge game in the Serie A title race, but it is also Antonio Conte’s return to Juventus.

The Inter Milan coach, who also played for Juve, had a successful period at the helm in Turin, winning three Serie A titles and two Supercoppa Italiana crowns.

Antonio Conte will make his return to Juventus this Sunday in charge of rivals Inter

‘Conte is a symbol of Juventus – he has won multiple Scudettos,’ Agnelli added.

‘We have a peaceful relationship with him, but we are professional.

‘That he took on the challenge of bringing ambitious Inter back to the winners circle, rubbing heads with [Inter President] Steven Zhang, who is a person I know and respect, is something that fascinates me.’
