John Barnes warns Liverpool over making "knee-jerk" decision amid injury crisis

John Barnes has warned Liverpool about making a "knee-jerk" reaction to their injury crisis in defence and urged his old club to just "deal with it".

The Reds have lost both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries which will put their preferred centre-back pairing out for much of the season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also currently ruled out for a few more weeks, while Fabinho is still recovering from the hamstring problem which has sidelined him since the end of October.

Reports have suggested Jurgen Klopp could now be tempted to dip into the transfer market when it reopens in January, but Barnes feels that would be an unnecessary move.

“There are a lot of people saying that Liverpool must buy a new centre-back in January, but when you break it down, most players except for Virgil van Dijk will be back before then," Barnes told BonusCodeBets .

“There is no need for a knee-jerk reaction, Liverpool have always planned ahead of time, but depending on the situation in January, the transfer window may become significant in terms of Liverpool needing more players due to the current situation.

“There is no need to harp on about it, we have to deal with it and not let the negativity creep into the dressing room because that is when it can affect our results."

It's been an extremely interesting start to the season for Jurgen Klopp's men.

They got their title defence off to a shaky start as they edged out a seven-goal thriller against Leeds, before going on to conceded seven in a hammering by Aston Villa.

Virgil van Dijk's season was ended by injury in the 2-2 draw at Everton, leaving the title favourites looking far less secure at the back – especially with Alisson's injury worries too.

But there's no slowing down in what is going to be a busy campaign – with Klopp ensuring his men continue at full pace as they bid for more title glory.

Fabinho is expected to be available for the visit of table-toppers Leicester to Anfield this Sunday, but failing that, fringe men Nat Phillips or Rhys Williams could deputise alongside Joel Matip.

Klopp has Neco Williams or James Milner to choose from to fill the void left by Alexander-Arnold, while Andy Robertson looks to have shaken off a minor issue to fulfil his usual role on the opposite flank.

Barnes added: "Liverpool can’t worry about things they have no control over, so until the January transfer window, Liverpool must work with what they have and have full faith in Jurgen and the set-up, regardless of whatever graduates are coming through.

“No one was complaining when we played Everton [in last season's FA Cup third round] with nine graduates and were still competitive. We still have a league to compete in and that must be the primary focus."
