Jadon Sancho joining Manchester United will be trumped if Raphael Varane completes a move to Old Trafford, reckons Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend. United have finally agreed to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho for an initial £73million. The England international will sign a five-year contract following the Three Lions’ participation at Euro 2020.
United have already turned their attention to who they can sign next after Sancho.
Real Madrid defender Varane is high on their list of targets and a deal looks like it could happen for the France international.
Varane is out of contract at Real in the summer of 2022 and Los Blancos do not want to lose him for nothing with the centre-back stalling on a new deal.
Townsend believes Sancho will provide United with extra attacking prowess.

However, he says the arrival of Varane will be much more significant in terms of how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side do in the major competitions next season.
“I think the Raphael Varane one, yes, because if you look at Man United’s team they’re very top-heavy at the front,” Townsend said on talkSPORT.
“They’ve got a lot of forward options, Jadon Sancho will give them another option.
“But that Varane one, I think he’ll come in, if he does come in, and solidify the back four, he’ll give them extra strength, extra pace.

“I think somebody of his calibre is more suited to the Premier League. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s quick.
“So I definitely think the Varane one could take Man United closer to where they want to be.”
West Ham star Declan Rice is another player linked with United.
Townsend believes the Red Devils would suit Rice more than Chelsea, who are also keen.
“Chelsea’s different because I think at Chelsea they like their holding midfielders to be ball-playing,” Townsend said.
“I think Kante’s kind of broken into that team under [Thomas] Tuchel towards the end of the season, so it’s Kante and a ball-player in a [Mateo] Kovacic or a Jorginho.
“So I don’t see where, unless one of those players leaves, I don’t see where he’d fit in there.
“Manchester United’s a different kettle of fish. We go back to [Paul] Pogba, looking at Pogba in the Euros with [N’Golo] Kante doing his running for him and Pogba having the licence to get on the ball and spray passes left, right and centre.
“He would need another player like that next to him, so that’s a different kettle of fish altogether.”
