Arsenal can compete to win the Premier League title in the next few years if they continue to be backed in the transfer market, according to Jack Wilshere. Former Gunners midfielder Wilshere has been training with Mikel Arteta’s side in recent months. He therefore has a first-hand look at how good the current Arsenal squad is.

Arsenal are fourth in the Premier League table as they aim to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2016.

Arteta spent big on new signings in the summer, with their outlay of around £150million the most of any club in Europe.

All six players to have been brought in have made positive starts to life at the Emirates.

Wilshere believes Arteta is the right man to continue Arsenal’s revival.

And he says a few more big signings brought in by owner Stan Kroenke could lead to a title push in the next two or three years.

Wilshere told talkSPORT: “I think with the right backing and bringing the right players in, he definitely has a clear structure and philosophy of the way he sees football and how he wants it to be played.

“Listen, they’re not going to win the league this year.

“But in the next two or three years, if they can get into the top four, get a few big signings in, give them time to settle and see how the manager wants them to play, I’m going to put it out there – I think they can, yeah.”

Wilshere has been training with Arsenal as he searches for his next club.

And Arteta has been full of praise for the former England international’s impact on the training pitch.

“First of all it’s great to have him around, he is this type of character who adds a special feeling to the club,” Arteta said.

“He comes in every day with a smile on his face, trying to do his best. His talent is unquestionable.

“When you see him in training, I think you have had some players say he is the best in training. So he has that. Now he is doing his coaching badges and it is completely up to him what the next step in his career will be and we are here to support that.”

Asked if Wilshere can still play in the Premier League, Arteta said: “Yes, 100 per cent! I have seen that, I can tell that he has [the ability to do so].”
