Inside Darren Fletcher’s new technical director role at Manchester United

Darren Fletcher and John Murtough will help restore the winning philosophy at Manchester United – but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have the final say on incoming transfers.

Rio Ferdinand has now detailed the new structure at Old Trafford and backed his former team-mate to help the club succeed by reporting to football director John Murtough in his role as technical director.

The former Scotland midfielder has been welcomed back to the club following his retirement, and was promoted as part of a change in structure in March of this year.

While there has been confusion over Fletcher’s day-to-day responsibilities, Ferdinand has detailed how he is spending time alongside the first-team playing squad.

When asked about the new role of Fletcher, Ferdinand told BT Sport on Sunday: “John Murtough is obviously the football director and Darren Fletcher is technical director.

“I’ll start with Fletcher – he is on the football pitch, he has his boots on and is working with the first-team every day. And he’ll be the person that plugs back in to John Murtough from a football perspective and a football angle.

“When they’re recruiting players, the type of player they want, the Manchester United philosophy from years gone by that they are trying to implement today.

“And what affect that will have on the dynamics of the squad etc and I think it’s about having that real football energy that comes from the training field and someone that understands the squad totally from a day to day basis.

“That will feed in when they’re recruiting, so all the different departments that feed into John Murtough from the football pitch as well – and I think that connection could be a good partnership.

“Until now I think it had been Matt Judge doing the negotiations with the players, and you’ve had Ed Woodward being a part of the recruitment structure and there’s maybe not been anybody overseeing that.

“I think that’s where John Murtough will come in and oversee all those different departments and pull that all together. Regardless of all that going on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will still have the final say on a player.

“When they’re all recruiting and all the data comes in and the analysis comes in for a player, and yes they’ve all agreed the departments all become one on a player or a particular position that they have identified – still the same person has to green light and that’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
