Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has revealed why he is yet to tie the knot with popstar partner Shakira.
The Spanish central defender has revealed that he is content with where he is in his life currently and doesn’t feel that marriage would influence their relationship. Asked by Gary Neville on The Overlap about why he is yet hasn’t married Shakira, Pique replied: “No, I'm not married."
Neville then asked if Pique wasn't proposing because Shakira wants to keep him on his toes, to which he replied: “It’s her mentality!" He continued: "I like it how we are right now. We have two kids, nine and seven, we work good as a couple. We don't have the need to be married, it's fine.”
Neville then joked that Pique had proposed to Shakira privately but been rejected, but he laughed off the comment. “No no no,” he said, “I would tell you!"
Shakira has dropped some hints to her boyfriend that she might like to have a ring on her finger, though he may not have been in the good books recently. The former Manchester United defender revealed that he preferred being booed and abused by Espanyol fans to sex.
He told The Wild Project: “I'm happy that Espanyol has been promoted to the first division because that's how we play in their stadium. I like to go there, I get whistled at all the time.
“You laugh and the fans get even madder. There is nothing comparable in the world. I would say it's better than sex. I enjoy it a lot more than playing against Real Madrid."
Pique and Shakira met whilst at the South Africa World Cup, in which the singer wrote the hit anthem Waka Waka. “She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony, and I asked her what the weather was like,” Pique explained.
"It is the typical stupid question… it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again — she was singing at the final." The defender won the entire tournament, beating the Netherlands in the final before the pair got together.
