Wesley Fofana must REJECT a move to Chelsea and stay at Leicester, warns former Blues captain Frank Leboeuf as the Foxes slap an £85MILLION price-tag on Thomas Tuchel’s defensive target
- Frank Leboeuf believes defender Wesley Fofana should stick with Leicester City
- The Foxes have put an £85m price tag on the Frenchman amid Chelsea interest
- Fofana would be competing for a centre back spot with Thomas Tuchel’s side
Wesley Fofana should stay at Leicester City instead of making a switch to Chelsea, according to former Blues defender and fellow Frenchman Frank Leboeuf.
The 21-year-old has been linked to a move to Stamford Bridge, prompting the Foxes to fix a price tag of £85million on the centre back.
However Leboeuf, who spent five years at Chelsea and captained the Blues 15 times during his spell there, believes Fofana is better off staying at the King Power Stadium right now, instead of joining Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Frank Leboeuf said Wesley Fofana should stay with Leicester instead of moving to Chelsea
‘It’s always a bet that you make because you never know when the defender’s going to settle down,’ World Cup winner Leboeuf said, according to the Metro.
‘With Fofana, it’s a tricky situation. You want to get a young player, [say] “I think he’s going to be one of the best central defenders in the world”, now to say you have to spend £80m to get him.
‘[But] the guy’s not even [a France] international, only played for St Etienne and Leicester, got injured last season, even if he’s been absolutely fantastic it’s difficult to say “okay, we’re going to spend that”.’
Fofana is a talent to watch out for, but he would face competition at Stamford Bridge.
Kalidou Koulibaly joined from Napoli this summer, with the Senegal international joining Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah as options at centre back for the Blues.
However, Tuchel’s favoured 3-4-1-2 system means they need more players in central defence, thus the rumours about Chelsea’s approach for Fofana.
Leboeuf wonders how Fofana would feel competing for a centre back spot at Stamford Bridge
‘He has a bright future but he knows that Koulibaly has just signed, Thiago Silva is there, Chalobah is still [there], so where is he going to be put in that situation?’ Leboeuf added.
‘Is there going to be a rotation system? “How many games am I going to play?” I don’t know if I want to take that bet.
‘[He could say]’ “I’m going to play for Leicester, it’s not for Chelsea, but at least I’m going to play and show to the world and maybe sign for a club that will give me a better spot than Chelsea can be able to do”.’
The Foxes signed Fofana from St Etienne two years ago for £36.5m, but he missed most of last season following a broken leg in pre-season last August.
Former Chelsea defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left the club this summer at the end of their contracts.
The Blues begin their Premier League campaign with Saturday’s trip to Everton, managed by another former Chelsea player Frank Lampard.
