Fernando Torres announces return to football – just months after retirement

Fernandes Torres has made at a shock decision to return to football almost two years after announcing his retirement.

Torres, 37, has not played since hanging up his boots with Japanese side Sagan Tosu in August 2019.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool striker has been pictured taking up boxing to help complete a remarkable body transformation in recent months.

A series of injuries hampered his later career but that does not seem to have put the former deadly Spanish frontman off a return.

And his latest cryptic social medaia message suggests a return to action is just around the corner.

"I only understand life in one way – playing. That's why I've decided to return," he announced on his Instagram account.

"This Friday I will communicate where."

He also added the hashtag '#vuelveelnino', which translates in English to #elninoreturns'.

The Instagram post includes a black and white image of a shirt with his famous number nine on the back, giving away no clues for his next potential destination.

Torres was best known for his scintillating pace and ruthless finishing in the peak of his powers.

The Spaniard was adored by Liverpool supporters after a spell at Anfield that ended with a superb record of 81 goals in 142 appearances.

But Torres damaged his hero status on Merseyside by making a £50m switch to Chelsea in 2011 in pursuit of more silverware at Stamford Bridge.

The forward could not spark in a Chelsea shirt and went on to feature for AC Milan, boyhood club Atletico Madrid and Sagan Tosu before calling time on his career.

But Torres could return in very much a different mould to his prime days after undergoing a fitness journey.

Torres has bulked up massively in lockdown and could become more of target man on his return rather than the elusive striker he made his name as.
