Ferdinand left gutted by Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool transfer in blow for Man Utd

Rio Ferdinand has been left gutted that Darwin Nunez has signed for Liverpool ahead of Manchester United.

The former Red Devils man took to Twitter to deliver his verdict about the new man on Merseyside. Ferdinand said: "Watched a lot of this guy in the Champions League last season… Virgil Van Dijk gave a glowing reference in a recent interview."

The 43-year-old then added, disappointingly: "Looks like a top signing for Liverpool unfortunately." Van Dijk had classed the Uruguayan hitman as one of the toughest strikers he's had to deal with when the Reds met Benfica in the Champions League.

The Dutchman said: "The name of [Erling] Haaland, and also Darwin, he’s a bit similar, very direct, quick, tall, strong, and it's quite difficult to play against those guys.”

Jurgen Klopp had also gleamed about Nunez when the sides met: "Really good, really good. I knew before, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with his tough battles with Ibrahima Konate.

“He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. Good, really good. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

United had been interested in the attacker – but Nunez reportedly only had one destination on his mind.

Nunez said: “There are some great players here and I think it’s going to suit my style of play here. As I say, I’ve watched quite a lot and it’s a very big club and I hope I can give everything that I’ve got in order to help the team.”
