‘Diana Ross took a better pen’: Football fans pile in on Jorginho after his SHOCKING penalty miss against West Ham… with Gary Lineker saying Chelsea star’s blunder reminded him of similar moment in Euro 2020 final
- Chelsea won a late penalty against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday
- Jorginho took it, but his effort was comfortably saved by Lukasz Fabianski
- One fan believed Diana Ross’s infamous attempt back in 1994 was better
- Gary Lineker also referred to Jorginho’s miss against England last year
Jorginho has been slammed on social media after his shocking penalty miss in Chelsea’s 1-0 win against West Ham on Sunday.
The Blues huffed and puffed for long periods before Romelu Lukaku finally earned the side a late spot-kick after being dragged back by Craig Dawson, who was subsequently sent off.
Jorginho stepped up to try and put Thomas Tuchel’s team ahead, but his timid effort was easily saved by Lukasz Fabianski. Christian Pulisic would go on to spare his team-mate’s blushes by scoring in the final minute of normal time to hand Chelsea all three points, but viewers appeared to be more interested in reacting to Jorginho’s dismal penalty attempt a few minutes earlier.
Jorginho used his usual technique when he took a late penalty against West Ham on Sunday
However, this time it failed to work as his effort was comfortably saved by Lukasz Fabianski
‘Diana Ross took a better pen,’ one fan wrote, referencing the singer’s infamous miss at the opening ceremony of the 1994 World Cup.
There were further scathing verdicts on Jorginho’s moment to forget.
‘One of the worst penalties ever. What was that from Jorginho????’ wrote football journalist Julien Laurens.
‘Rom has done us a huge favour there for Jorginho to hit the worst penalty I’ve seen in my entire life,’ a fan added.
Jorginho is not the first high-profile player to miss a penalty this weekend as Bruno Fernandes also failed to find the target for Manchester United against Arsenal on Saturday.
Similarly to Jorginho, Fernandes took his time before striking his penalty, but despite sending Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way, his shot hit the outside of the post and went wide.
Bruno Fernandes also missed a penalty for Manchester United against Arsenal on Saturday
Manchester United YouTuber Flex suggested Jorginho’s effort was even worse than Fernandes’s.
He wrote on Twitter: ‘Jorginho asking Bruno to hold his beer!’
The holding midfielder also had his spot-kick saved by Jordan Pickford in last year’s Euro 2020 final between Italy and England.
After his latest miss, Gary Lineker posted on Twitter: ‘That penalty from Jorginho brings back a few memories,’ alongside a face palm emoji.
Jorginho missed from the spot against England last year in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley
It is also possible that Lineker was referring back to his own penalty miss from 1992, when his tame shot in an international friendly against Brazil was kept out, preventing him from drawing level with Bobby Charlton as England’s leading goalscorer at the time.
Jorginho missed two penalties in World Cup qualifying for Italy last year, with the Azzurri going on to fail to qualify for the major tournament last month.
However, despite his recent record from the spot, Chelsea boss Tuchel hinted after his side’s win that Jorginho would remain as the designated penalty taker at Stamford Bridge.
‘It works for us normally to 100%. It was never necessary to change. It can happen. Hopefully it is an unusual thing. He is disappointed but happy we could turn it around,’ he said.
