Fans fume as Bournemouth top of Premier League despite season not starting yet

Football fans are fuming on social media over Bournemouth's top Premier League position despite season yet to kick-off.

The Cherries won automatic promotion from the Championship last season after finishing as runners-up to Fulham. Scott Parker's side returned to the top-flight of English football for the first time in two seasons, after being relegated in 2019/20.

But their return to the league has not been the most welcoming by other fans, given their positioning at the top of the table. Being AFC Bournemouth, they sit above Arsenal in alphabetical order, despite the club being referred to as just Bournemouth.

One fan wrote on Twitter: They can't keep getting away with it!!, while another added: "Petition for all clubs starting with AFC to change their name, or else be destroyed."

A third joked: "I'd be renaming my club Aardvark FC," while another went as far as researching: "The club adopted the AFC Bournemouth name in 1971, with the intention that the club would appear first in alphabetical lists of English clubs," how petty!"

Another fan responded: "Petition to change Arsenal's name to Aarsenal," and one added: "The season hasn't even started yet and I already want Bournemouth gone."

Meanwhile one joked: "'The Arsenal', should be 17th, surely?" and another continued: "Another reason for Arteta to go, they can't even beat Bournemouth in the alphabet."

While another complained: "Especially annoying since Athletic should go after Arsenal anyway," another said: "Won't last long anyway."

So far Parker has welcomed two signings in Joe Rothwell and Ryan Fredericks on free transfers. Rothwell joined the Cherries from Blackburn Rovers, while Fredericks ended his four year connection with West Ham for a move to the south coast.
