Ex-United target Torres makes awful blunder and shows why they chose alternative

Former Manchester United transfer target Pau Torres made an awful blunder during Villarreal's win over Alaves on Tuesday, showing why they chose an alternative.

Several top European clubs were linked with the Spanish defender in the summer following his displays for Villarreal as they won the Europa League, beating United in the final.

He also played in every match for Spain at both the Euros and the Olympics during the summer, reaching the semi-finals and finishing second, respectively.

However, United ultimately opted against signing the 24-year-old in the summer and instead opted for Raphael Varane as an alternative purchase instead.

This decision now appears to have paid off after Torres' awful error in Villarreal's latest match.

Shortly after the hour mark and with the hosts leading Alaves 2-1, Torres took a free-kick deep in his own half but passed the ball straight to opposition striker Joselu.

With goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli out of position due to the free-kick, the former Stoke City striker was able to capitalise on Torres' error and stroke the ball into an empty net.

Torres' blushes were ultimately spared, though, as goals from Gerard Moreno, Boulaye Dia and Yeremy Pino in the final 15 minutes helped seal a 5-2 victory for the Yellow Submarine.

In addition to United, Torres was also strongly linked with Tottenham Hotspur in the summer before they also opted for an alternative option.

Spurs instead brought in Cristian Romero from Atalanta to bolster their defence, but a Premier League move could still be on the cards with Aston Villa rumoured to be readying a move.

The Spaniard's selection for the Olympics meant that he would not have been able to join up with either Spurs or United club until just one week before the start of the Premier League season.

Having remained with Villarreal, Torres struggled in both matches against United in the Champions League, losing them both.

He has also managed just six clean sheets in 22 matches this season, with Villarreal heading into Christmas in 11th in La Liga.

His latest mistake only further solidifies that United made the correct decision by signing Varane instead.
