Jordan Henderson was denied a last-kick winner for Liverpool because of the tightest of VAR offside calls.

Everton's unbeaten record continued after Sadio Mane was deemed offside in the build-up – but only seemingly by a matter of an arm hair.

Mane had got Liverpool off to the perfect start, firing home within just three minutes.

A lively start was added to when Jordan Pickford escaped a certain red card for a horror tackle on Virgil van Dijk, which forced the Liverpool defender off with a knee injury.

And from there, Everton found their rhythm – and Michael Keane levelled before the break, with the help of some suspect goalkeeping from Adrian.

Mo Salah's second half strike was cancelled out by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose header continued his fine goalscoring form before Henderson struck in stoppage time, only to have the goal ruled out.

Richarlison saw red for Everton in the closing stages, following a high tackle on Thiago Alcantara.

Here is how Chis McKenna, our man at Goodison Park, rated the performances on a dramatic day…

Everton

PICKFORD 5

Lucky boy to escape red on Van Dijk and got away with Henderson late goal ruled out.

COLEMAN 6

Went off injured but had been beaten too easily by Robertson for Mane goal.

MINA 6

Looked really solid until a tame clearance gave Salah the chance for second.

KEANE 8

Great header to get Everton level and impressive in defence too.

DIGNE 8

A threat down the left flank, good covering tackles and an assist.

DOUCOURE 7

His shoulder to get the ball of Salah encapsulated a fine display.

ALLAN 8

Mopped up in midfield and looks a shrewd bit of business at £20m.

GOMES 5

Looked of the pace in the first half and was rightly hooked later on.

RODRIGUEZ 8

Some of his passing was outstanding and not afraid to track back. Superb.

CALVERT-LEWIN 8

Got himself into some great positions and what a header for equaliser.

RICHARLISON 6

Went close when hit post but sent off for nasty tackle on Thiago.

Substitutions

Godfrey for Coleman (32mins): 7

Sigurdsson for Gomes (72mins): 6

Iwobi for Doucoure (78mins): 6

Unused subs: Olsen, Delph, Bernard, Davies.

Liverpool

ADRIAN 6

Not as commanding as Alisson but couple of decent saves from him.

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD 7

Went close with a free-kick and as ever got down the flank to threaten.

MATIP 7

Didn't look off the pace but difficult dealing with Calvert-Lewin.

VAN DIJK 6

Little impact after going off in the 11th minute because of a horror tackle from Pickford.

ROBERTSON 8

Great run and pass to set up Mane goal while always looking to create danger.

HENDERSON 8

Went close with a good strike and then cross led to second on fine display.

FABINHO 7

As usual did his job quietly, important pass for second goal.

THIAGO 8

Some moments of magic with the ball and outstanding vision on first start.

SALAH 8

There when it mattered to fire Liverpool in front with his 100th goal for the club.

FIRMINO 6

Will have wanted to be involved more in the game but some nice passages of play.

MANE 7

Great first goal in the game and a constant threat for the visitors.

Substitutions

Gomez for Van Dijk (11mins): 6

Jota for Firmino (78mins): 6

Wijnaldum for Fabinho (90mins): 6

Unused subs: Kelleher, Milner, Jones, Minamino.
