Emma Raducanu tweet hijacked by Michael Owen jokes after SPOTY post

Emma Raducanu was crowned winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards 2021 at the ceremony held on Sunday.

The 19-year-old captured the hearts of the nation when she defied the odds to win the US Open title back in September.

Raducanu – who was born in Bromley – won the main accolade ahead of the likes of Olympic diver Tom Daley and swimmer Adam Peaty.

Fans congratulated the tennis star for her award win on social media, but it was a tweet by Michael Owen which caught many people’s attention.

Owen congratulated Raducanu in a tweet which strangely accompanied a picture of himself winning the SPOTY award back in 1998.

It read: “Congratulations to @EmmaRaducanu who thoroughly deserves to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year 2021. Makes me feel very old that she’s the same age as I was waaaaay back in 1998. #SPOTY

But after Raducanu announced she would be joining British Airways as a global ambassador on Tuesday, fans responded on Twitter by jokingly mocking Owen after his original tweet.

Raducanu’s tweet reads: “Thrilled to join the @British_Airways family as a global brand ambassador! The airline has already been part of a special time for me, flying me home from the US Open. I look forward to working with the iconic British brand on some exciting projects! #britishairways.”

One user tweeted in response: “Can’t wait for the Michael Owen tweet.”

Another said: “@themichaelowen’s already done this too, Emma… before he tell you himself!!! Only kiddin’ Michael! #xmasbanter”

A third tweeted a fake picture of Michael Owen in a cockpit in reference to his previous tweet.

Raducanu meanwhile, described winning the award as an honour following her phenomenal year in tennis.

“Thank you, it’s such an honour to be amongst the nominees,” she said. Congrats to you for such an amazing year and all your achievements," she said upon receiving the award.

“To win, it’s pretty amazing to me. I am really happy with this of course and I watched Sports Personality of the Year growing up, so I’m really humbled to join the amazing past winners.

“I’m very happy for British tennis that we managed to get this award again.”
