Emi Buendia could attempt to copy Alexis Sanchez in securing his dream shirt number if he joins Arsenal this summer. Arsenal have reportedly made a bid of £30million for Norwich City star Buendia. Norwich are said to want up to £40m for the 24-year-old, who still has three years remaining on his Carrow Road contract.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his attacking midfield options and Buendia is on his list of targets.

Aston Villa have also bid £30m for the Championship player of the season, according to The Sun.

Buendia scored 15 goals and registered 16 assists in his 39 league outings last term.

Arsenal remain favourites to sign the Argentina international, who is currently on Copa America duty with his country.

And if he does indeed move to the Emirates, one of his first tasks will be to choose his shirt number.

Buendia has worn the No 17 shirt throughout his three years at Norwich.

He also wore the same jersey on a loan spell at Spanish club Cultural Leonesa for the 2017/18 campaign.

However, if he wants to wear that number for Arsenal, he will have to follow the same approach as former Gunners star Sanchez.

Sanchez moved to Arsenal in the summer of 2014 for a fee of £35m – similar to what the Gunners must pay for Buendia.

The Chile international demanded the No 17 shirt upon his arrival.

It was held by Nacho Monreal at the time but Arsenal told Monreal he had to change, and the Spaniard took the No 18.

Just as it was in 2014, the No 17 is already occupied in the current Arsenal squad.

Versatile full-back Cedric Soares dons that jersey under Mikel Arteta.

Buendia could therefore attempt to copy Sanchez and steal that number.

However, Arsenal have to secure a deal first for the Norwich star.

Canaries sporting director Stuart Webber recently claimed the club would only sell their star players for a club-record fee.

The highest fee Norwich have ever received for a single player was the £25m they got from Everton for Ben Godfrey last summer.

“If we do sell one, it’s going to be a club record deal,” Webber said.

“It’s probably going to start with a number three in front of it.

“That will give us great opportunities to maybe make the whole better as well. We’re really relaxed on that front.”
