Chelsea fans have hit back at Alan Smith after the commentator blamed Edouard Mendy for Arsenal's first goal on Wednesday night.
The Blues suffered an early setback as Andreas Christensen's howler gifted the Gunners a goal in the 13th minute. The Danish defender attempted to play a back pass to Mendy but fluffed the ball completely, allowing Eddie Nketiah to latch on to the mistake.
Mendy thought about rushing out to meet the ball but opted to remain in his box and was duly punished by Nketiah, who put Arsenal 1-0 in front. It prompted Sky Sports commentator and Arsenal hero Smith to bizarrely question the shot-stopper's decision-making for the goal.
Smith said: "He's a superb finisher there's no doubt about it. But it's a howler from Christensen.
"Mendy had a deeper starting position and couldn't come for it. Maybe Alisson or Ederson would have been on the edge of their box and able to come out."

But fans have been left outraged by Smith's blaming of the Senegalese keeper, who was essentially left one-on-one with Nketiah as a result of Christensen's error.
One fan fumed on Twitter: "Has Alan Smith seriously tried pinning that on Mendy's starting position? Christensen made the mistake. End of. **** off blaming the keeper."
Another tweeted: "Alan Smith blaming Mendy for that Christensen howler?"
A third wrote: "That's utterly embarrassing from Christensen. In fact, what's equally embarrassing is Alan Smith attempting to defend him by suggesting he'd have expected Mendy to come out like Alisson."
Mendy conceded three more on the night as Arsenal shocked the Stamford Bridge faithful by winning 4-2.
