Eddie Howe hints at massive Newcastle transfer activity after Trippier’s arrival

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has hinted at the club carrying out massive transfer activity this month after the signing of Kieran Trippier was confirmed.

The England full-back became the first signing of the new era at St. James' Park on Friday morning when his arrival from Atletico Madrid on a two-and-a-half-year deal was finalised.

However, Newcastle's January spending appears far from over as Howe explained that "a lot of hard work has gone into planning for the January transfer window."

The Magpies became the richest club in the world when the £300million Saudi-led takeover of the club was completed back in October.

Speaking to the club website after the signing of Trippier, Howe said: "I am really pleased to welcome Kieran to Newcastle United.

"I have long admired his abilities and have followed his career, so when the opportunity arose to secure him, we didn't hesitate.

"A lot of hard work has gone into planning for the January transfer window long before the month began, which is clear in how quickly we have been able to complete this move.

"I would like to thank everyone involved, particularly our owners, and I'm very much looking forward to working with Kieran again on the training pitch."

Newcastle are expected to be one of the Premier League's biggest spenders this month due to the wealth of their new owners.

Trippier has arrived for a fee believed to be worth around £12million and the club are understood to have already put in bids for a host of other targets.

The former Spurs defender was previously signed by Howe at Burnley in 2011 and could make his Newcastle debut on Saturday against Cambridge United in the FA Cup.

Following the confirmation of Trippier's arrival, Newcastle will now turn their attention to other transfer targets, including central defenders Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

Newcastle are also understood to have tabled a bid for Everton left back Lucas Digne earlier this week and are expected to look at bolstering their options in midfield and attack as well this month.
