Manchester United supporters have been told what to expect from Donny van de Beek.

The Netherlands international has been the only notable incoming deal at Old Trafford this summer, which could pile pressure on the shoulders of the midfielder as he prepares to make his debut.

However, club hero and Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar is confident that the 23-year-old will impress United fans, going on to loosely compare some of his traits to those of Paul Scholes.

There has been questions over how Van de Beek would fit into a system that already includes Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, but Van der Sar has insisted that he is versatile enough to be included.

In a chat with MUTV, he said: “He can play in different positions in midfield – he can be a six or an eight or a 10, he has a great eye for a goal. His technique is brilliant, he can go box to box.

“I’d compare him a little bit to Scholesy, although Scholesy had a cracker of a shot from 30/40 yards out and that’s not Donny’s strength, but he likes to come into the box and chip in with goals.

“Maybe it’s unfair to compare him to Scholesy actually, but he’s a good lad and I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to the team that Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] is creating for United.

“I presume he’s had a talk with Ole and they’ve talked about different positions [he can play]. He’s multi-functional, he can play a little bit deeper which I think is his preferred role.

“Of course, we know United already have a couple of great midfield players there so he will find his way in the team and also with the amount of games that top clubs need to play this year in the Premier League and Champions League and the cup matches, everything is quite intense so you need a good, wide squad and I think the midfield looks okay at the moment for United.”

Solskjaer’s side start their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on Thursday, and Van de Beek could be handed his Premier League debut.

The player said when the transfer was confirmed: "I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history.

"I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.”

With his new manager adding: "Donny has all of the technical attributes needed to perform in this team and has the personality required to succeed at Manchester United.

"His ability to see space, time his movements and read the game will really complement the qualities that we have in midfield and his arrival really strengthens the depth of talent we have in that position."
