Diogo Jota shirt number: Liverpool target has perfect option available, two alternatives

Liverpool have agreed a deal worth up to £45million to sign Diogo Jota from Wolves and the 23-year-old has the perfect shirt number available to him. The Reds had been relatively quiet in the transfer window prior to this week.

Talks then quickly progressed with Bayern Munich to sign Thiago Alcantara and a deal was confirmed on Friday.

And it appears as though Liverpool have wasted no time in moving on to their next target.

Their interest in signing Timo Werner earlier this year made it clear that Jurgen Klopp was desperate to bring in someone to provide further back-up to his usual front three.

Werner proved too costly for Liverpool and the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic forced them to look at cheaper alternatives.

Ismaila Sarr had been strongly linked with a move for Anfield, but Watford were said to be demanding up to £50m.

But things have moved quickly in the past few days with Liverpool agreeing an initial £41m deal to sign Jota.

Liverpool will reportedly only pay £4m up front for the Portuguese forward, with the remaining fee being paid over the course of his contract.

Paperwork is still to be finalised on the deal before it is confirmed but Jota could well be available to make his Liverpool debut in the EFL Cup tie against Lincoln on Thursday.

There aren’t a lot of shirt numbers available to Jota though once his deal is completed.

Liverpool set to sell six players in transfer exodus

Thiago took the No 6 shirt vacated by Dejan Lovren while Kostas Tsimikas was given No 21 when he joined.

The No 2 shirt is available after Nathaniel Clyne left the club on a free transfer, but Jota is unlikely to take that.

But there is one historic shirt that could well be Jota’s first choice.

Sadio Mane vacated the No 19 shirt in 2018 to take No 10, previously worn by Philippe Coutinho.

And Jota could well follow in the 28-year-old footsteps by making the No 19 shirt his own.

Mane scored an impressive 33 goals in just 67 games during his time wearing the No 19 on his back and Jota would certainly go some way to repaying his fee if he was to replicate that form.

Jota also wore the No 19 shirt during his one season on loan at Porto for the 2016/17 campaign, where he scored eight goals in 27 appearances.

The 23-year-old wore No 18 during his time at Wolves, but that is currently held by Takumi Minamino.

Jota has a few alternatives available with Adam Lallana’s old No 20 currently free.

The No 25 shirt is also a possible option, which was last seen on a Liverpool player when Pepe Reina was still in goal at Anfield.
