Ousmane Dembele’s agent insists Barcelona contract impasse is NOT down to money as he criticises Xavi’s management after he played the £96m man after Covid without training
- Ousmane Dembele is approaching the end of his contract with Barcelona
- There have been claims his wage demands have halted Barca offering new terms
- But now the Frenchman’s agent has spoken out against such rumours
Ousmane Dembele’s agent has cited Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez’s poor management style as the reason for Dembele’s contract negotiations reaching a stalemate.
Dembele’s agent Moussa Sissoko has criticised some of Xavi’s management decisions and wants better for his player before a new deal can be agreed.
Addressing speculation that the stand-off was because of Dembele’s financial demands, Sissoko told L’Equipe (via Sport) that ‘it is not a question of money. It’s a question of day to day.’
Ousmane Dembele’s agent insists his wage demands are not an issue in Barca contract talks
Dembele’s agent instead was criticial of the way new Barca boss Xavi has used him in games
Referring to Barcelona’s Copa del Rey match against Linares Deportivo when Dembele was brought on at half-time to try and help Barca come back from 1-0 down, Sissoko told L’Equipe that the decision to play Dembele ‘without having trained after coming out of Covid was difficult to understand.’
The No 7 Dembele did not seem as though he was lacking fitness as he went on to score the equaliser and played a key role in Barca’s 2-1 victory over Linares Deportivo to qualify for the next round.
However, Sissoko believes the general management from Xavi needs to improve in order for the Frenchman to agree a deal.
The 24-year-old joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for a fee of £96million.
Since joining the Spanish side, Dembele has struggled to maintain fitness, making just 86 LaLiga appearances at the club and only three starts so far this season.
The France attacker Dembele is now in the final few months of his Nou Camp contract
There have been rumours of a possible return to Germany for Dembele with reported links to Bayern Munich, and English clubs Chelsea and Tottenham keeping a close eye on his situation out in Spain.
Reports suggest that Barcelona boss Xavi has repeatedly tried to convince Dembele that there is no better option than Barcelona, but with only 4 months left on his contract, there is a realistic risk of him leaving as a free agent in the summer.
According to L’Equipe, no subsequent meeting has been arranged between Barcelona and Dembele’s representatives, but discussions between the French player and the Spanish side are still likely to resume at the end of this month.
