Manchester United could land Ousmane Dembele for a bargain price in the January transfer window after the winger infuriated Barcelona on deadline day.
Dembele was on United's radar going into the final day of the summer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side sought out alternatives to top target Jadon Sancho.
Barca were believed to be keen to offload the 23-year-old, after boss Ronald Koeman made it clear he would not have a major role in his first-team plans this season.
But Dembele did not join United, leaving the La Liga giants furious, according to ESPN , as they were unable to complete the signing of Memphis Depay from Lyon.
Barca will attempt to get Dembele off their books again in January – and United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward could be land him as little as £45million.
That's according to Sport , which claims Dembele was 'very close' to joining United on deadline day.
The Spanish publication reports that Dembele was set for a loan move to Old Trafford, despite having initially been reluctant to join the Premier League side.
He was even believed to have been contacted by France teammate and United star Paul Pogba to help get the deal over the line.
However, the loan fell through when the winger refused Barca's request for him to extend his contract by another 12 months to 2023.
Dembele has struggled to realise his potential since joining Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and is behind exciting teenager Ansu Fati in the Nou Camp pecking order.
His chances have been further limited by Philippe Coutinho's return to favour, having been restored to the Barca starting line-up by Koeman.
But while Koeman is keen to offload him, it is not clear whether United will still want him after they signed 18-year-old wingers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Traore on transfer deadline day.
The Red Devils will also be expected to launch another bid for Dortmund winger Sancho next summer, so may choose to save funds for the £108m-rated star rather than splurge on Dembele.
