Declan Rice has revealed that his brother’s partner gave birth to a baby girl moments after Harry Kane scored England’s winner against Denmark in their Euro 2020 semi final on Wednesday evening.
Gareth Southgate’s side booked their place in Sunday’s final against Italy with a 2-1 victory at Wembley but needed extra time to see off Denmark.
Rice started alongside Kalvin Phillips once again at the heart of England’s midfield and delivered another solid performance.
But the West Ham midfielder was given an extra reason to celebrate after the final whistle after he was told about the new addition to his family.
‘My brother has literally had a baby, literally as the second goal went in,’ Rice told BBC Sport.
‘My brother’s crying his eyes out, he’s had a little girl. It’s an unbelievable night, I’m so happy. It’s a special night all round.
‘A first final since 1966. I so want to do it for the people at home. Seeing the reactions – I’m a fan as well.
‘I wish I was with them cheering, we’ve not won anything yet. Italy are a top side but we’re ready.’
Meanwhile, Southgate urged his England players to overcome ‘one more massive hurdle’ against Italy in Sunday’s final at Wembley.
‘I’m so proud of the players,’ Southgate said after the win over Denmark.
‘It’s an incredible occasion to be a part of – we knew it wouldn’t be straightforward.
‘We said to the players we’ll have to show our resilience and come back from some setbacks, and we’ve done that tonight. The most pleasing thing is that we’ve given our fans and our nation a fantastic night, and the journey continues on for another four days.
‘There’s one more massive hurdle to try to conquer. Italy are a very good side. They’ve shown outstanding form and have defensive warriors at the back who have been through everything. It’s something to look forward to.’
