Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has revealed that, up until the age of 15, he would be deployed as a playmaker before being told his strengths lie in the heart of the defence.
The Dutchman rose the the ranks at Ajax before completing a £67.8million move to Juve last summer.
After standing out in a young and exciting Ajax squad, De Ligt admits he actually could’ve been vying for places with Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek should he have ignored the advice given to him.

Up until the age of 15, De Ligt would play in midfield before making the move to defence
‘Up to the age of 15 I played as a playmaker. I played a lot in midfield, scored a few goals and made some assists,’ De Ligt told UEFA’s official website.
‘But then they told me that for my career it would be better to play as a central defender.
‘At the beginning I thought: “I don’t like playing in defence,” but I now realise that playing as a midfielder has helped me. I am happy with my development.’
