David De Gea’s stance on a potential exit from Manchester United has emerged, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set for a selection headache. The Spaniard saw his place as United’s number one usurped by Dean Henderson last season.

With Solskjaer understood to be a huge fan of Henderson, the Englishman was brought into the starting line-up amid De Gea’s absence due to personal reasons in March.

After being brought into the line-up for the trip to Crystal Palace, Henderson would go on to start all but two of United’s final 11 matches in the Premier League.

Henderson would concede just four goals in a run of eight successive starts, which also saw United go unbeaten in the league.

De Gea by contrast has come under fire in recent seasons for a perceived lack of form, with the Spaniard keeping less clean sheets than his rival last season, despite playing more games.

Arguably the nadir of De Gea’s season came in the Europa League final when he missed the crucial penalty which saw Villarreal defeat Solskjaer’s side.

As a result, it appeared to be highly likely that United would move De Gea on this summer to clear a path for Henderson.

The 30-year-old still has two years left on his contract, which sees him take home an eye-watering £375,000 per week.

Perhaps as a result of his recent struggles and those wage demands, it is set to be a struggle for United to get their wish.

De Gea certainly will not be playing ball with the Red Devils with regards to an early end to his stay in Manchester.

According to ESPN, De Gea will return for pre-season training ready to fight for his place in the starting line-up.

It is stated that the Spanish keeper is keen to stake his claim for the number one shirt rather than attempt to leave United.

The report claims that despite Solskjaer’s view of Henderson, his mind is not yet made up about who will start in goal for the Red Devils when the season gets underway.

Potentially forcing De Gea’s hand is the fact that United are yet to receive any concrete offers for the keeper.

Having been part of the Spain squad as they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020, De Gea will return late to pre-season training.

Henderson meanwhile should play a full part in the Red Devils’ preparations after recovering from a hip injury which curtailed his involved at the summer tournament.

De Gea’s stance leaves Solskjaer with a major dilemma, as he will have four senior keepers in his squad next season.

Lee Grant was handed a new contract while another veteran keeper, Tom Heaton, has also been brought into Old Trafford.
