Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are poised to face off once again after Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were drawn together in the Champions League group stages.

The two clubs have been pitted against each other in Group A of the competition, which will begin on September 14 and 15.

They will be joined by RB Leipzig and Club Brugge in a tough-looking group.

Gary Lineker was one of the first people to react to the draw, tweeting: "You couldn’t make it up: @ManCity and @PSG_English in the same group. Could we see Messi v Ronaldo again."

Someone else joked: "Messi and Ronaldo went straight from El Classico to Oil Classico."

Another person said: "UEFA trying to squeeze as many Ronaldo/Messi showdowns as possible before they retire."

A fourth Twitter user commented: "Ronaldo joining city and Messi is already in PSG, get ready for Oil Classico. After Man Utd, Real Madrid and Juventus it's time for Messi to humble this guy in Man City."

While another excited fan added: "Manchester City vs PSG in group A. We get yet another round of El Cashico and potentially Messi vs Ronaldo. Beautiful stuff."

A sensational reunion between the pair depends on Ronaldo's future, with suggestions on Thursday that the 36-year-old is close to joining Manchester City.

According to reports in Spain, the veteran Portuguese forward has already agreed terms over a shock move to the Etihad Stadium, leaving only a transfer fee to be agreed.

Messi, on the other hand, swapped Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month after the Catalan giants were unable to offer the Argentine superstar a new contract.

The 34-year-old has joined PSG with the aim of winning the Champions League, telling reporters at his unveiling: "I think we have the team to do it here."

Only time will tell whether the French club have what it takes to go all the way, but fans can at least start looking forward to another mouth-watering clash between Messi and Ronaldo – if the latter completes a move to City.
