Conte 'will tell Tottenham he needs SIX new signings this summer'

Antonio Conte ‘will tell Tottenham he needs SIX new signings this summer’ to compete for major trophies as he prepares for crunch talks with Daniel Levy… but club face balancing act to avoid breaking homegrown rules

  • Antonio Conte is attempting to lead Tottenham into the top four this season
  • They have been on upward trajectory but traditional frailties still remain
  • Conte is convinced the club need to reinvest in the playing squad this summer

Antonio Conte is convinced that his Tottenham squad needs as many as six new signings if they are to compete for silverware next season.

While traditional frailties still remain, Spurs have generally been on an upward trajectory under the Italian and are chasing Champions League qualification.

A fourth-place finish is not the limit of Conte’s ambition and the manager wants the resources in place to battle for the Premier League title.

Daniel Levy will have showdown talks with Conte, where the Italian will make his demands

According to the Telegraph, he is preparing for crunch talks with Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici during which he will tell them he needs as many as six new players.

Conte will find out if his level of ambition is at the same level as Levy’s and he has 12 months remaining on his contract in north London.

They also report that Spurs will have a problem balancing the names they want to recruit alongside the Premier League and UEFA’s homegrown rules.

Tottenham have 16 players who count towards that tally, before the loanees Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele are factored into the equation.

Spurs need homegrown players but midfield additions could mean Harry Winks leaves

Dejan Kulusevski, who is likely to join permanently, and Rodrigo Bentancur, were signed in January without the worry of European quotas after Spurs had been knocked out.

But there is now a precarious balancing act for Paratici and Co.

Nottingham Forest right-back Djed Spence is one target who would count towards the homegrown number but Harry Winks could leave if the squad is bolstered in midfield.

Youri Tielemans, Gleison Bremer and Christian Eriksen are possibilities – though all three would make that balancing act even more tricky.

Torino defender Gleison Bremer is one target on Tottenham’s radar for the summer

If Conte wants to sign a foreign player in attack, it seems likely that Steven Bergwijn or Lucas Moura would be on their way out.

There is a feeling that Tottenham have pulled off a major coup in persuading Conte to take charge.

This summer will be crucial in keeping the Italian and persuading him that his grand ambitions are mirrored by the club.
