Coach Fred Rutten has rejected Erik ten Hag's offer to join his Manchester United as he suffers a damaging blow.
Ten Hag is set to takeover as the club's new permanent manager in the summer and is currently putting together his backroom staff. His Ajax assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag is set to follow him to the Premier League from the Netherlands but Rutten will not be joining the club in the summer.
The former Feyenoord and Anderlecht manager has revealed that while he was approached by Ten Hag, he will instead be joining PSV in the summer.
He told ESPN, via the Metro: “I have a family, I have grandchildren. I want to see them every now and then.
“At Manchester United you get on a train and you can’t get off it. I want to feel comfortable in something you step into. That is the case with PSV. It’s nice when you have grandchildren, who you see every now and then and who can play ball with.”
Rutten, who is currently on the board at NEC Nijmegen, will instead join former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy at PSV ahead of next season.
Van Nistelrooy is preparing for his first senior managerial role having spent time managing both the club's under-21 and under-18 sides.
Where will Manchester United finish under Erik ten Hag next season? Let us know in the comments section below.
“Of course I spoke extensively with Ruud van Nistelrooy," added Rutten. "He triggered me to give up the slightly freer life that I now have. He sat in the room with me and we talked for two hours about football and other things. And when talking about those other things in life, he also triggered me.
“I think Ruud already has some experience, he has already trained a number of teams, at Jong PSV and their under-18s.
“He has also acquired experience from the Dutch national team. Ruud is ready, that’s what it seems to me. I am positively critical. For me, PSV stands for a Champions League club. Everything you do should serve that thought.”
Ten Hag will replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick in the United dugout in the summer once he has completed the season at title-chasing Ajax.
