Chelsea striker Timo Werner is awaiting Covid-19 test results after developing flu-like symptoms while on international duty with Germany.
Werner, 24, has been ruled out of Germany’s friendly clash with Turkey this evening, with assistant manager Marcus Sorg confirming he has undergone coronavirus tests.
“Timo Werner has a slight cold and won’t join up with the team today,” Sorg said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“Several tests have been done, but the results are not in yet.”
Depending on the result of his test, Werner could yet feature in Germany’s two other fixtures against Ukraine and Switzerland in the Nations League.
His Chelsea team-mate Kai Havertz is expected to play against Turkey tonight, with Sorg saying: “He is a player who can always raise our game.
“So I think he will definitely be starting tomorrow.”
Both Havertz and Werner sealed lucrative moves to Chelsea from Germany in the summer transfer window.
The former joined in a £72million switch from Bayer Leverkusen, before opening his Blues account with a hat-trick in last month’s Carabao Cup clash with Barnsley.
As for Werner, he secured a £54million transfer from RB Leipzig back in June, leaving the German club before their memorable run to the Champions League semi-finals over the summer.
The pair have struggled to impress so far in the Premier League, nonetheless, and are both still searching for their first goals.
Yet before their 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, Blues boss Frank Lampard admitted he has been playing Havertz and Werner out of position due to injuries elsewhere in his squad.
