Chelsea linked with Hungarian Van Dijk Szalai who is fan of Thiago Silva

Attila Szalai’s move to Chelsea is a "done deal" according to his national side’s manager, while the prospective transfer would enable the Hungarian to link up with his idol Thiago Silva.

The Fenerbache centre-back has been linked with several of Europe’s elite clubs – but none as much as the Blues, with Marco Rossi saying the move to Stamford Bridge had been wrapped up. He said: "Apparently his move to Chelsea is a done deal"

The 23-year-old enjoyed a superb Euro 2020 tournament over the summer and performances have led supporters of his country to affectionately refer to him as the “Hungarian van Dijk”.

Szalai, a diehard AC Milan fan, is a strong admirer of Silva, according to Goal, and that could well be the pull that would see him snub the likes of Napoli, who have also shown interest, in favour of the Premier League side.

A fluent German speaker, communication would not be an issue with Thomas Tuchel, who is having to contend with the possible departure of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen at the end of the season, both with less than a year left on their contracts.

Both players started either side of Silva during West Ham’s 3-2 win over the west London side last weekend. It’s an area that needs addressing quickly, and Szalai is considered a great suit.

"He should be one of the best central defenders in Europe in a couple of years," Rossi recently told Inside Football, having played him for every minute during his side’s World Cup Qualifying campaign.

For his country, he’s been positioned on the left of a back-three, a system suited to Tuchel’s preferred 3-4-2-1 blueprint.

Szalai is known for his superb reading of the game, intelligence, strength, and passing. "He should be one of the best central defenders in Europe in a couple of years," Rossi recently told Inside Football.

"I like many things about him. He is very good at closing his opponents, very good at reading the game, and in defensive duels. He is a complete player."

Chelsea were strongly linked with pacey Frenchman Jules Koundé over the last summer window but the deal never came into fruition. The Hungarian could be a cheaper alternative.
