Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has golden chance to sign Kai Havertz upgrade

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard wants to sign Kai Havertz when the transfer window reopens. The Bayer Leverkusen star has been in stunning form in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists from 30 league appearances. However, with Manchester United now setting a maximum fee of £50million to sign Jadon Sancho, Lampard has the perfect opportunity to hijack a deal.

Chelsea didn’t sign any players under Lampard last season, with the Blues slapped with a transfer ban at the time.

But they seem eager to make up for lost time and have already made significant statements of intent with deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

It was announced back in February that Ziyech would be moving to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, with the Morocco international choosing to leave Ajax behind to pursue a new challenge elsewhere.

And, earlier in June, Chelsea officially confirmed the signing of Werner from German giants RB Leipzig.

Now, they’re hoping Havertz will be next.

Lampard insisted in the week that no bid for the Germany international had been lodged but, despite that, his body language gave the game away.

  • Chelsea: Lampard hoping for second huge striker signing after Werner

Yet with Manchester United now setting a maximum price tag of £50m for Sancho, Chelsea could be sorely tempted to hijack a deal.

The Blues have also been linked with a move for the England international, even if their preference appears to now be Havertz.

And with Chelsea losing Willian and Pedro, possibly to Arsenal and Roma, Lampard must now give serious consideration to the prospect of reigniting Sancho transfer interest.

The Dortmund star grew up supporting the Blues. A tweet on the night they won the Champions League in 2012 previously went viral.

And Chelsea can offer Sancho the tantalising prospect of playing alongside the likes of Werner, Ziyech and Christian Pulisic at Stanford Bridge.

Furthermore, the Dortmund star has also outperformed Havertz this season.

  • Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich makes ‘massive statement’

While the German was directly involved in 18 Bundesliga goals, scoring 12 and assisting six, his statistics are dwarfed by Sancho.

In the league alone he scored 17 goals from 32 appearances – his best-ever statistics for a single campaign.

And he also registered 17 assists as Dortmund finished second in the table, a huge 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich.

In the Champions League, Sancho was also impressive.

He scored two and assisted two from eight matches in the competition before Dortmund’s exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, who won the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Lampard’s old Chelsea pal John Terry has already urged his old side to land Sancho, saying earlier in the campaign: “I think Sancho is one of the best young players in the world at the moment, so he’d be a great addition to Chelsea’s squad.

“It would make us better as well, but the ones that have come through, the Billy Gilmours, Tammy [Abraham], Mason [Mount], Reece [James], it’s endless isnt it? There have been so many positives this season.”

Havertz would undoubtedly be a great signing.

But Sancho would be a true upgrade and, with Manchester United setting a maximum price tag, Chelsea could now be tempted to swoop.

They have the money with the deals for Ziyech and Werner both funded by Eden Hazard’s blockbuster departure to Real Madrid a year ago.

And whether Chelsea now choose to capitalise on United’s Sancho dilemma is something only time will tell.
