Chelsea are 'leading the way on £50m-rated Jules Kounde'

Chelsea are ‘leading the race for £50m-rated Jules Kounde and have opened fresh talks with Sevilla’ as they look to replace departing duo Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen this summer

  • Chelsea have lost two defenders on free transfers so far this summer
  • It is reported that Cesar Azpilicueta could be following his team-mates out
  • Jules Kounde is thought to cost around £50m which would not prove a stumbling block for Chelsea
  • The club chased the player last summer but a deal could not be completed

Chelsea are believed to be leading the race for highly-rated Sevilla central defender Jules Kounde.

The Frenchman is thought to be one of the most sought-after young players in Europe this summer, with various European giants said to be chasing the player.

Despite competition, Sport report Chelsea are leading the way in the pursuit of the Sevilla player, with the club said to have started talks immediately as the recent takeover was completed.

Chelsea hope to sign Sevilla’s Jules Kounde for around £50m as part of a defensive overhaul

The reports in Spain claim that the £42m-£52m Chelsea will likely have to fork out should they want the centre back to come on board will not prove a stumbling block for a club that are keen to rebuild their squad under Thomas Tuchel this summer.

The price is thought to be quite significantly lower owing to financial difficulties at the south Spanish club.

It had been reported that the owners, led by Todd Boehly, were to provide a significant cash injection this summer to allow Tuchel to carry out the rebuild.

The departures of Rudiger and Andreas Christensen (centre) are an issue for Thomas Tuchel

With Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both departing the club on free transfers this summer, to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, Chelsea needed to ensure they were not left short in that department.

Tuchel is said to want up to four defensive reinforcements this summer.

Reports suggested that the representatives of the player had already spoken of their interest at such a move. Chelsea, Sport said, will present an offer as soon as possible owing to the interest from both parties.

Antonio Rudiger is leaving Chelsea to join Real Madrid when his contract expires in June

Barcelona were thought to be one of those who might compete with the west London club for the player, but their financial situation seemingly blocks them from moving for the player at any significant price.

The Catalans have as yet been unable to register Christensen owing to their financial state, which is still said to be dire with the club needing to get players off the books before any can come in.

The club wishes to acquire Robert Lewandowski this summer, with the Pole this week having declared his desire to leave Bayern Munich for what is thought to be Barcelona.

Diego Carlos has already departed Sevilla for Aston Villa as the Midlands side moved early

Such is their financial state, that it appears likely if Chelsea move quickly for Kounde a deal could be swiftly completed.

Meanwhile, Sevilla’s situation could be similar to Chelsea’s current predicament if Kounde departs the club.

Having lost two of their first choice defenders, the Blues’ pursuit of Kounde will look to indirectly cause the same damage to Sevilla who have already lost Diego Carlos to Aston Villa.
