Brighton defender Ben White is set to be named in England's provisional Euro 2020 squad on Tuesday, according to reports.
Southgate abandoned plans to name a final 26-man squad for the tournament this week after Harry Maguire was named in Manchester United's squad for Wednesday's Europa League final.
Maguire, a banker to start for the Three Lions if fit and firing, is an injury doubt for the European showpiece after damaging ankle ligaments earlier this month.
Southgate is therefore waiting to see if his star centre-back plays and comes through United's clash with Villarreal before making a final decision over his squad.
As a result, the England manager will name an extended provisional squad on Tuesday which will be trimmed down before the June 1 deadline.
And reports suggest White, who is yet to be capped by his country, will be included in that squad.
The 23-year-old defender has impressed for Brighton this season, starting 36 of their 38 Premier League outings.
His versatility makes him an attractive option for Southgate, as he is capable of playing on the right side of a back three, in a back four, at right-back and in defensive midfield.
And amid injury concerns over Maguire and Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips, White could be in with an outside chance of sneaking into the final squad next week.
The youngster deputised for Phillips in midfield at times during his loan spell at Leeds in 2019/20, showing he is capable of slotting into a deep-lying midfield role.
Southgate made a trip down to the south coast to watch him play for Brighton earlier this month, and he was clearly impressed with what he saw.

White will now wait anxiously over the next week to see if he earns a shock place in England's final Euro 2020 squad, which would be his first ever call-up to the national side at all levels.
