Benfica boss Jorge Jesus had admitted there are difficulties over signing Nemanja Matic from Manchester United this summer.
The Serbia international revealed that he would be open to returning to the club he spent three years at between 2011 and 2014.
It comes after a drop in appearances for the Red Devils this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has preferred Fred and Scott McTominay to the ex-Chelsea star, with him being left on the bench 12 times in the Premier League.
Despite his contract not expiring until 2023, there has been talk that Matic could leave in the summer – and he has one destination in mind.
“I still don’t think about finishing my career. Let’s see,” he told Sport TV.
“For me, Benfica was always in the heart. Let’s see what the future will bring.
“If Benfica ever thinks they need me again, let’s think about it, but now I’m very happy at United, I don’t think about leaving, but in football you never know.
“If one day I return to Portugal, the only team I wanted to play for in Portugal is Benfica.
“I was very happy there. Benfica is one of the best clubs in the world. I was very happy there in the team, with the fans and with everyone in the club.
“Whenever I have time, I like to go to Lisbon. My family also likes it a lot and misses everyone from Lisbon.”
Jesus was his manager at Benfica, a club he rejoined last year after spells with Sporting Lisbon, Flamengo and Al-Hilal.

But the 66-year-old has bad news for Matic, admitting snapping the midfielder up this summer would not be easy.
According to A Bola via Sport Witness, the Benfica boss believes it would take the 32-year-old dropping his wage demands considerably.
Portuguese clubs have been hit hard by the Covid pandemic and do not have the same financial backing as the likes of United.
However, the report does state that Jesus would love to sign Matic back to Benfica – but it is a matter of money.
