Barcelona have assigned the legendary No 10 shirt to wonderkid Ansu Fati following the departure of Lionel Messi. The shirt has been worn by Messi since 2008, but was left vacant following the Argentine’s departure.
Messi left the Camp Nou last month after it was unveiled that his boyhood club could not afford to keep their star player, despite the Argentine offering to take a 50% pay cut.
After making 778 appearances for the Catalan giants, scoring 672 goals and winning 34 trophies, many expected the No 10 shirt to be retired in Messi’s honour.
However, Ronald Koeman’s side have wasted no time in trying to find reassigning the prestigious number, handing it to Fati.
The 18-year-old has made just 31 appearances for Barcelona in his career but the club are hoping he is their next superstar forward.
Fati joined Barcelona’s academy in 2012 when he was 10-years-old, and six years later he made his debut for the first team.
A week later, the Spaniard scored his first goal for the club aged 16 years and 304 days, meaning he is Barcelona’s youngest ever goalscorer.
After a successful breakthrough season in 2019/20, Fati was officially named in the following campaigns first team.
In November 2020, the Spain international tore the meniscus on his left knee in a match against Real Betic, he had to undergo surgery that sidelined him until last month.
Now on course to return to full training, Fati will be hoping to get back on the pitch and show the world that he is the right player to meet the expectations that the no.10 shirt provides.
Fati was announced as the new heir to the throne in a video on Twitter where he was shown donning the club’s new kit with his full name printed on the back.
Barcelona then released an official statement justifying their decision, it read: “Ansu Fati has a new shirt number.
“After wearing the number 22 then 17, the young Barça striker will proudly wear the number 10 shirt – a famous jersey previously worn by legends such as Leo Messi, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo.”
