Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shocked viewers as he missed three clear-cut chances against Rangers during Arsenal’s pre-season friendly.
Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu are starting to approach the business end of the summer with increased transfer activity and players returning from international duty.
The Gunners were simply not good enough last season as they finished eighth in the league for a consecutive season and crashed out of the Europa League semi-final against the same coach they sacked a year earlier.
But while Arteta will be hoping for significant improvement next season, the signs shown by skipper Aubameyang in a recent friendly were worrying to say the least.
Though Arsenal’s team has not quite been the full-strength side we will see against Brentford in the league opener in August, they have begun pre-season sluggishly.
They lost 2-1 to Hibernian in the first game before drawing to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers 2-2 on Saturday, conceding poor goals from set-pieces in the process.
But the biggest cause for concern thus far would be Aubameyang who appears to be continuing on from his lacklustre form last season.
Aubameyang squandered chance-after-chance when he could have put his side in the clear.
He initially missed a golden opportunity which one would expect a forward of his ilk to tuck in, especially after cutting in from the left on his favoured right-foot.
Arsenal’s no.14 then fluffed a close-ranged header before somehow missing an open goal tap-in before half-time.

The Gabonese international signed a contract in summer 2020 having been one of the standout stars in English football during his first two-and-a-half seasons.
He has since looked a shadow of himself and netted an Arsenal career low of 10 goals last campaign.
Arsenal will be hoping their talisman regains his confidence ahead of a pivotal season, with one positive take away being that he is at least getting into dangerous positions.
The Gunners will be desperate for his clinical edge to return as they pursue Champions League football.
