Arsenal made five new signings over the summer as Mikel Arteta demanded new faces to bolster his squad.

The first man to put the Gunners’ shirt on was William Saliba, who finished his loan spell at Saint-Etienne in June after signing for £23.7m last season.

But he was joined by Willian in August as the Brazilian swapped west London for north following the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Arteta made it two centre-backs added to the squad when he beat Manchester United to Gabriel Magahaes’ signature in a deal worth £27m.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s exit for Aston Villa sparked the need for another goalkeeper, leading to the arrival of Icelandic shot-stopper Alex Runarsson from Dijon.

With the hours ticking away on deadline day, Arsenal managed to get one more deal over the line in midfielder Thomas Partey.

The Atletico Madrid star had teased a move throughout the window before his £45m release clause was activated.

With new options, it means that Arteta can now boast a starting XI full of defensive presence as well as attacking experience.

There’s only one space for the goalkeeper, so Bernd Leno – despite wearing the No.1 shirt and playing all but one game this season – makes way for Runarsson.

A back-four would see Saliba and Gabriel, who scored on his debut against Fulham, partner in the centre.

While the full-back positions would be taken by regulars Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney.

With Partey bringing Champions League experience as a defensive midfielder, the Ghanaian could sit in front of the back line.

And this creates the opportunity to form a partnership with Dani Ceballos, who made his loan move from Real Madrid permanent over the summer.

The Spaniard would be able to run forward and link up Willian, sitting in the middle and spraying passes to the front three.

Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe would work the wings, aiming for centre-forward Alexandre Lacazette.

Arteta is considering his options as he prepares to face Manchester City – but the north London side may not have to deal with midfield maestro Kevin de Bruyne.
