Arsenal team news: Expected 4-3-3 for Aston Villa clash as Arteta makes Willock decision

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta could name a similar starting XI to the Gunners’ last Premier League match when they face Aston Villa on Sunday. The majority of the team who beat Manchester United 1-0 last weekend could keep their spot in Arteta’s side. Express Sport have picked an XI we expect to see line up against Dean Smith’s side.

Goalkeeper: Leno

Bernd Leno has played every minute in the Premier League this season so will keep his spot in goal.

The German will want to impress, with his former rival for the No 1 spot Emiliano Martinez in the opposite net.

Some Arsenal fans were against the sale of Martinez in the summer and would have preferred to see him rather than Leno play this season.

But Leno has the chance to repay the faith shown in him by Mikel Arteta.

Defence: Bellerin, Luiz, Gabriel, Tierney

Arteta is likely to stick with the four-at-the-back formation which was on show against United as well as Molde in the Europa League on Thursday.

Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney are the first-choice options at full-back and it should remain that way if they keep fit.

The main decision Arteta will have is who partners Gabriel at the back.

David Luiz came through 90 minutes against Molde so could come in for Rob Holding, despite the Englisman’s impressive performance at Old Trafford.

Midfield: Elneny, Partey, Saka

Arteta should pick the same midfield that performed so admirably against United.

The Spaniard said this week that Joe Willock is pushing for a more prominent role but an appearance off the bench is more likely for the 21-year-old.

Mohamed Elneny has found a new lease of life since returning from his loan spell at Besiktas last season and should keep Granit Xhaka out of the side again.

Thomas Partey is already one of the first names on the Arsenal team sheet following his deadline day arrival.

Bukayo Saka should complete the midfield, with the England international having the ability to push forward and create for Arteta.

Forwards: Pepe, Lacazette, Aubameyang

Nicolas Pepe could come in for just his second Premier League start of the season.

Willian has failed to impress since the opening day of the campaign and Pepe needs to be given more opportunities to showcase his talents.

Alexandre Lacazette is set to keep his place up front after being rested against Molde, with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang playing in his now familiar left-sided role.

Arsenal expected XI vs Aston Villa: Leno; Bellerin, Luiz, Gabriel, Tierney; Partey, Elneny, Saka; Pepe, Lacazette, Aubameyang.
