Arsenal fans make Saliba demand to Mikel Arteta after Van Dijk comparison

Arsenal’s transfer window was dominated by the £160m they spent on Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Sambi-Lokonga, and Nuno Tavares.

Mikel Arteta’s side were the highest spenders in the whole of Europe when it comes to transfer fees, and the North Londoners have improved since they were all finally available for the team.

However, with Arsenal absent from all European competitions for the first time in 25 years, supporters of Arteta’s side have been focusing on the Gunners’ players who are temporarily donning the jersey of another team.

And one player has excited their supporters as William Saliba enjoyed a strong display in Olympique Marseille’s 0-0 draw against Galatasaray.

The French side were held at the Stade Velodrome in a tight affair against the Turkish side which really could have gone either way.

But, Saliba’s strong display at the heart of the French side’s defence caught the attention of Gunners’ fans who were drooling over his performance.

“William Saliba actually looks like a decent defender” said one Arsenal fan, while another said “William Saliba is so good!”

“The irony of William Saliba not being good enough to play for Arsenal, but playing for Olympique Marseille in the Europa League while Arsenal can’t even make the Europa Conference League.”

“I need William Saliba and Guendouzi to get recalled from their loan spells. It’s time” added another impressed supporter.

These claims come after the youngster was compared to Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk – by his personal fitness coach.

Nicolas St-Maurice told Football London: "When I first saw him I thought of Van Dijk because of his positions of plays and he has the right potential to make it far.

"Next season he will make a solid case for himself."

Saliba was a £27m signing from Saint Etienne in the 2019 summer transfer window, however, the North Londoners opted to loan him back to the side for experience.

Last season, he was loaned out again to OGC Nice, before moving onto Marseille for another campaign on loan in Ligue One.

He has made seven appearance for Jorge Sampaoli’s side this season, and if his good performances continue this season, Arteta could finally take a chance on the 20-year-old defender.

He is yet to make a senior appearance for club since joining in 2019.

Fellow Frenchman and Gunner Matteo Guendouzi also joined Marseille on loan in the summer – both players have played a key role so far this season.
