Arsenal expected to confirm ‘best piece of business in years’ in coming days

Arsenal will be completing their best piece of business “for many years” by tying Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang down to a new contract, according to former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison.

Aubameyang has been locked in talks with Gunners chiefs over an extension for months, having entered the final year of his current deal back in July.

Mikel Arteta is understandably desperate to keep hold of the 31-year-old, whose scored four crucial goals in their FA Cup semi-final and final victories over Manchester City and Chelsea last season.

He also got on the scoresheet in Saturday’s 3-0 win away at Fulham, helping the north London club open their 2020/21 account in style.

After that victory, Arteta revealed confirmation of Aubameyang’s new contract should be made public in the next few days.

And Morrison believes the Gabon international extending his stay represents a terrific piece of business for Arsenal.

“When Arsenal tie him down, it's the best bit of business that Arsenal have done for many years,” he said on Sky Sports News.

Aubameyang’s strike at Fulham was his 72nd for Arsenal in a mere 111 appearances, and it was also one of his finest.

From a tight angle inside the box, the Gunners ace opened his body and curled the ball into the top-right corner, leaving Marek Rodak helpless.

When talking about the goal, Morrison added: “Let me tell you something, see this goal, they used to call it 'the Thierry Henry’.

“I’m not calling it 'the Thierry Henry' anymore, I'm calling it 'the Aubameyang' because I saw him do it in the Community Shield against Liverpool.

“This is a fantastic finish. He had Kieran Tierney on his outside, he could have rolled in [Ainsley] Maitland-Niles, he said: 'Nah, I want a piece of this action this afternoon' and it is a fantastic finish.

“Willian picks him out, his touch, you don't know which way to show him because as you saw in the cup final, [Kurt] Zouma, can he show him inside?

“No, because he can go back outside on his left foot and he can finish [with his] left foot. He's a superb individual.”
