Newcastle are monitoring Anthony Martial’s situation at Manchester United with the team in urgent need of a striker following Callum Wilson’s injury.
Sportsmail understands Martial was not the type of forward they were targeting before this month and Eddie Howe wanted younger back-up options to Wilson.
However, the fear of their top goalscorer missing the bulk of this season with a torn calf muscle has changed the club’s thinking and priorities.

Martial’s name has come into the equation but United have said they are reluctant to let players go right now because of the Covid-19 situation.
The 26-year-old has started just twice in the Premier League this season and has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford. Sevilla are interested in a loan deal but will not cover his wages in full.
Liverpool’s Divock Origi is another name that has been mentioned but it is thought Howe has reservations, although the loss of Wilson could force the club into compromises this month.

Newcastle are also fielding enquiries for their own players but want to see what they have incoming first – Kieran Trippier will be confirmed on Thursday – before sanctioning any outgoing moves.
They have rejected an Everton offer for Sean Longstaff, thought to be in the region of £1million, but the midfielder is out of contract in the summer and Toffees boss Rafa Benitez is an admirer.
Meanwhile, Wilson has confirmed Sportsmail’s story of him seeing a specialist this week to determine the exact nature and severity of the injury he suffered during the 1-1 draw with Manchester United on December 27.

Speaking on the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast, he said: ‘It’s a strange one because I don’t actually know how long I’m going to be out for myself yet.
‘I’ve got an appointment on Friday with a specialist basically to go through everything and see what the scan says and we can go from there and distinguish a time frame really.
‘It’s in my calf, soleus area. You do that same movement a thousand times a week in training but for some reason I’ve managed to push off in the wrong position, the wrong location and it’s got a tear in it and gave way.’
