Alaba transfer situation "unclear" amid father’s dismissal and Liverpool claim

David Alaba's future is still clouded in uncertainty following comments from both his father and manager.

The 28-year-old Bayern Munich defender looks certain to leave the club before too long, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The likes of Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with the player, but Real Madrid have emerged as the most likely suitors, with some reports claiming they could even sign Alaba this month.

However, Alaba's father George recently told Sport1 that nothing has been decided yet.

"A decision has not yet been made and David has not yet signed with Real," he said. "Besides Real, there are other clubs that are interested in him.

"For him what counts is that he wants to concentrate fully on Bayern and his performance."

It comes after a report from German publication Bild that although Madrid remain favourites, Liverpool are still in the running for Alaba.

And Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick added to the confusion by saying: "These are things that are always possible. I honestly say that I have not yet heard anything from him.

"Hope dies last but obviously I know there is a certain direction. That would be a change for the team, no doubt. But what is important is that he remains as focused as against Freiburg (in the 2-1 win last weekend).

"We know that in football changes are possible and that after a season changes can take place. The only thing we can do for now is wait and see what happens."

Alaba has spent practically his whole career at Bayern, helping them win nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.

Liverpool's desire for a new defender is no secret, and the Austrian international would certainly bring a huge amount of winning experience and genuine quality.
