Emerging midfielder Adam Cerra is set to nominate Carlton next week as his preferred destination after Michael Voss was appointed as the Blues senior coach on Thursday.
The 21-year-old has played 76 games in his four seasons at Fremantle since being taken at No.5 in the 2017 national draft, but has decided to return to Victoria for family reasons.

The Blues have always been the frontrunner to land him, but Melbourne also made a bid to secure him with a pitch that showed they are capable of bolstering their midfield through the trade period in the next few seasons.
Carlton are yet to be informed of the decision. The AFL trade period starts on the Monday week, when the Blues will be able to begin negotiations with Fremantle, who are expected to want the Blues’ first pick in exchange for the midfielder.
Fremantle are also likely to be in negotiations with Geelong for their contracted defender Jordan Clark, with the Cats bracing themselves for a trade request. Young Geelong tall Nathan Kreuger is also set to join Collingwood during the trade period along with the Bulldogs’ Patrick Lipinski.
The Blues are also keen on Sydney free agent George Hewett with the defensive midfielder to join Carlton during the free agency period, while the Swans are expected to enter a tough negotiation with Adelaide after defender Jordan Dawson nominated the Crows as his club of choice.
Sydney could attempt to secure a player in exchange for Dawson, who had a breakout year in 2021 when he finished third in the club best and fairest.
