Lando Norris has revealed he and his McLaren team are ready to mount a charge against Constructors’ champions Mercedes and their newbie George Russell.
Russell – who is tipped as one of Formula One’s rising stars – has left former team Williams to join Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes after Valtteri Bottas made the move to Alfa Romeo.
The Silver Arrows have dominated the F1 scene in recent years, having won the last eight constructors’ titles and youngster Russell has been picked to be the man to carry on the dominance in the years to come.
One man who is also set for a bright future in the sport is fellow Brit Norris, and ahead of the 2022 season the McLaren man has made competing with his young British counterpart his main aim.
Norris said: “First of all, I hope we [himself and Russell] get to go wheel-to-wheel.
“If we go wheel-to-wheel then I think we’ve had a good start to 2022. Or he’s had a bad one!
“I think, of course, we’re going to be optimistic and hope we can start the season well, and [hope] we can be closer to Ferrari, and Mercedes, and Red Bull, I guess especially those final two.
“So we’ll wait and see. Time’s going to tell.
“I don’t think anyone really knows where anyone’s going to be at the beginning of next season.”
There is no doubt Mercedes and Red Bull have been the dominant forces in recent times, especially last campaign as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen distanced themselves from the rest of the pack all year long.
However rule changes to cars have been implemented ahead of the 2022 campaign, in order to make the season a much more competitive one this time around.
And this evening of the playing field has given Norris hope that his McLaren team can compete this coming year.
He continued: “But we’ve definitely got some ground to make up and it’s not going to be easy, although it’s new rules and everything, to make up all of it for next year.”
Rule changes or not there is no doubt Mercedes, and more specifically Hamilton will be at the right end of the standings throughout 2022 as he hunts down a record eighth world championship.
And many will also expect his new teammate Russell to be not too far behind, as he looks to make a mark for the Silver Arrows.
Therefore Norris believes that if he is competing alongside his fellow Brit in 2022, then he will most probably be in a good spot.
Norris commented: “If I’m racing George, then we’re racing Mercedes, and if we’re racing Mercedes then I think we’ve had a good off-season.”
