Hamilton makes Verstappen dig after "sensible" Leclerc battle at British GP

Lewis Hamilton aimed a subtle dig at Max Verstappen as he praised Charles Leclerc’s racing etiquette after a dramatic British Grand Prix.

Hamilton excelled at the home race and was in the fight for victory until the closing stages before eventually having to settle for third behind the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

It had already been a thrilling affair at the home of British motorsport but there was one final twist when Esteban Ocon’s broken down Alpine triggered a late safety car.

Sainz, Hamilton and Sergio Perez dived into the pits while Leclerc stayed out on his hard tyres. After Ferrari refused Leclerc’s request for him to be allowed past his team-mate, Sainz stretched away while Leclerc, Hamilton and Perez battled for the final steps on the podium.

Perez eventually managed to break clear in second, leaving Hamilton and Leclerc to put on a thrilling dice for third spot, which the seven-time world champion edged, to the delight of the British crowd.

It was a hard but clean battle and didn’t see a repeat of the clash between Hamilton and Verstappan at last year’s Silverstone race, which ended with the Dutchman in the barriers.

“Charles did a great job, what a great battle,” Hamilton told Sky Sports. “A very sensible driver, clearly a lot different to my experience last year at Copse for example.

“Two of us went through there no problem. What a battle. We had to have the tyre deficit in order to get past him, but a really, really amazing weekend.”

Asked if he thought the win was on at one stage, Hamilton said: “For a while it was feeling on. A bunch of things went against us. Unfortunately, the gaps [at the end] were too big and the pitstop wasn’t very quick. And we struggled with the warm up [of the tyres]. It was tough.”
